SUMMARY:Research Seminar (Ridhi Sahani)
DESCRIPTION:IMSI Research Seminars are open to the public. Email CIMS@uci.edu for Zoom access. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTitle: In Vivo Characterization of Three-Dimensional Skeletal Muscle Mechanics \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Ridhi Sahani (Northwestern University and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab) \n\n\n\nDate: Mon\, May 11\, 9-10am PT / 12-1pm ET \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Ridhi Sahani is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Neuromuscular Control Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Dr. Sahani earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia and her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Bucknell University.  Her research focuses on understanding how skeletal muscle structure governs three‑dimensional muscle function to improve our understanding of\, and treatments for\, muscle injuries and neuromuscular disorders. She integrates in vivo experimentation\, advanced imaging\, and computational modeling to bridge insights across scales.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Skeletal muscle injuries have debilitating impacts on daily function. The material properties of muscle govern its ability to resist stresses during injury and in vivo measures of these properties would help explain how and why injuries occur during physiological conditions. To characterize the shear and tensile properties of living muscle we coupled micro-indentation and uniaxial extension in cat soleus muscles\, with finite-element modeling. Our studies reveal stress-dependent behaviors in active and passive muscle\, providing the first measurements of the full material properties of living muscle. By integrating insights across scales\, this work establishes a framework for understanding how muscle properties influence function in vivo and guiding the design of rehabilitation approaches.

SUMMARY:Research Seminar (Gregory Sawicki)
DESCRIPTION:IMSI Research Seminars are open to the public. Email CIMS@uci.edu for Zoom access or tune in using the YouTube livestream link below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTitle: Pushing exoskeletons out of the lab and into the wild: ‘Smart-apparel’ to support resilient mobility across the healthspan and lifespan. \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Prof. Gregory S. Sawicki (Georgia Institute of Technology) \n\n\n\nDate: Tues\, April 21\, 12-1pm PT / 3-4pm ET \n\n\n\nLocation: UC Irvine\, NatSci I\, Rm 1114 \n\n\n\nYouTube Livestream: https://youtube.com/live/AvL5jThOZvM?feature=share \n\n\n\n(Or email CIMS@uci.edu for Zoom access) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Gregory S. Sawicki is a Professor and Joseph Anderer Faculty Fellow at Georgia Tech with appointments in the School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Biological Sciences. In 2025-2026\, Sawicki will serve as the Interim Executive Director of Georgia Tech’s Institute on Robotics and Intelligent Machines (IRIM). \n\n\n\nSawicki completed his Ph.D. in Human Neuromechanics at the University of Michigan\, Ann-Arbor (‘07) and was an NIH-funded Post-Doctoral Fellow in Integrative Biology at Brown University (‘07-‘09). Sawicki was a faculty member in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at NC State and UNC Chapel Hill from 2009-2017. In 2023\, Sawicki was awarded the American Society of Biomechanics Founders’ Award for scientific accomplishment in biomechanics and excellence in mentoring. \n\n\n\nSawicki directs the Human Physiology of Wearable Robotics (PoWeR) laboratory—where the goal is to combine tools from engineering\, physiology and neuroscience to discover neuromechanical principles underpinning optimal locomotion performance and apply them to develop lower-limb robotic devices capable of improving both healthy and impaired human locomotion (e.g.\, for elite athletes\, aging baby-boomers\, post-stroke community ambulators). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Our aim in the Human Physiology of Wearable Robotics (PoWeR) Laboratory is to discover and exploit key principles of locomotion neuromechanics in order to build wearable devices that can augment intact or restore impaired human locomotion. Over the past 10+ years we have taken a lower-limb joint and muscle-level approach to develop physiologically-inspired ankle and hip exoskeletons that aim to improve walking economy. Reducing effort and increasing speed for people post-stroke and in natural aging are important use-cases for exoskeletons – but other objectives such as improving balance or delivering body-borne\, targeted resistance training may also be key for improving mobility. This talk will highlight some key foundational studies in the archive and touch on our recent collaborative projects that leverage wearable sensing & AI to speed the transition of bioinspired wearable technology out of the lab toward impact in ‘real-world’ environments in the form of ‘smart-apparel’ to support resilience across the lifespan.

SUMMARY:Research Seminar (Coen Elemans)
DESCRIPTION:IMSI Research Seminars are open to the public. For Zoom access\, please email cims@uci.edu. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTitle: Embodied Motor Control of the Animal Voice \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Professor Coen P. H. Elemans (University of Southern Denmark) \n\n\n\nDate: March 11th\, 2026\, at 1-2pm PT \n\n\n\nAbstract: Our voice is important for human communication\, identity\, and artistic expression\, and laid the basis for our unique cultural evolution. Making sounds with our voices is also the main way all mammals\, amphibians\, and birds communicate. This process involves complex and carefully coordinated body movements\, which are crucial for success in competition for resources and finding mates. However\, we still have only a basic understanding of the mechanisms that control both animal and human voices. \n\n\n\nOver the past ten years\, Prof. Elemans’ lab has identified physical mechanisms how sounds are produced across different vocal vertebrates. In addition to discovering remarkable adaptations in rodents and aquatic frogs\, they have shown that the myoelastic-aerodynamic theory for human sound production explains how many vertebrates\, including birds\, primates\, bats\, but also toothed and baleen whales\, generate sound. This groundwork was crucial for defining and quantifying the parameters that modulate these vocal signals\, and for building embodied models of vocal motor control in key animal model systems for vocal communication.
