SUMMARY:Integrative Movement Sciences-Summer Research Institute
DESCRIPTION:The IMS-Summer Research Institute is an interdisciplinary research and training incubator that aims to transform the field by integrating understanding of muscle function and movement from molecules to behavior. The SRI will be a 4-week training event from July 15th-August 15th\, 2021 that will bring together teams of faculty\, postdocs\, graduate students\, and undergraduates to develop interdisciplinary partnerships in movement sciences and work on specific projects that integrate across organizational scales to bridge critical gaps in current knowledge. \nWorkshops will be held on Tuesday and Thursdays at 10 am PST throughout the 4-week Institute and will be made available to the public. Workshops and seminars focus on identifying important limitations and gaps in current knowledge and highlighting the potential for novel and emerging approaches that integrate across organizational scales to provide new insights.  \nThe IMS-Summer Research Institute will occur virtually\, at UC Irvine\, and at participant’s labs across the country.

SUMMARY:IOMM Workshop - The Ins and Outs of Behavior: Mathematical Foundations (Part 1 of 3)
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Integrative Movement Sciences presents the first in a series of workshops on Integrative Organismal Modeling of Movement (IOMM)…The first workshop\, led by Dr. Bing Brunton and Dr. Simon Sponberg\, focuses on how to analyze behavior from the perspective of the inputs and outputs of the organism\, treating it as a dynamical system. \nThe first part of the workshop will go over how to represent simple 1-dimensional sensory inputs and motor outputs as a function in the complex plane. The second part will cover how much more complicated\, higher dimensional inputs and outputs can be captured in a relatively compact representation using dimensionality reduction techniques. \nZoom link: https://uci.zoom.us/j/98935197676?pwd=MTBqRG9KVkgyd09mNDhGdmNHV0lOdz0 \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:IOMM Workshop - Seeing and doing: inferring control for vision and action (Part 2 of 3)
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Integrative Movement Sciences presents the second in a series of workshops on Integrative Organismal Modeling of Movement (IOMM)…This workshop\, led by Dr. Doug Altshuler and Dr. Nidhi Seethapathi\, focuses on mathematical frameworks for inferring sensorimotor control in biological systems. \n\n\n\n\nDoug will explain the theoretical basis of detecting visual motion\, and cover some of the major findings from studies of visual guidance and visual neuroscience in flying insects and birds. Nidhi will describe mathematical frameworks for inferring control for movement\, and different ways to quantify the stability of the inferred controller. She will discuss applications of these methods to animal locomotion\, and pitfalls in interpretation. \n\nPlease join us for this free\, virtual event! \nZoom Webinar Link: https://uci.zoom.us/j/98935197676

SUMMARY:Upcoming workshop at SICB 2024!
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Advancing accessibility\, collaboration\, and training in use of model-based and analytical tools in organismal biology\nThis workshop brings together diverse scientists at the intersection of organismal biology\, mathematics\, physics\, and engineering\, with shared interests in using model-based approaches to address fundamental research questions. A key focus will be on how we can work together to improve education and training in use of computational tools\, increasing accessibility across disciplines.\nThis in-person event is a collaborative effort between participants of the virtual IOMM workshop series and the SICB 2024 symposium (S2)\, “Computational and physical models in research and teaching to explore form-function relationships”. All meeting attendees are welcome\, but space is limited. Preregistration and confirmation from the organizers is required. Lunch will be provided. Register here

SUMMARY:Summer Research Institute
DESCRIPTION:IMSI Summer Institute 2024_Flyer \nThe IMSI Summer Institute is an interdisciplinary research and training incubator that involves a network of faculty\nspanning 21 institutions across the country. Each research team will collaborate on a specific research project aligned\nwith IMSI themes of investigating 1) dynamic muscular control of movement in unsteady and perturbed conditions\, 2)\nbridging across organizational scales through integrated experiments and modeling\, 3) bridging between human and\ncomparative studies of movement\, and 4) investigating movement in ecologically relevant complex environmental\nconditions. IMSI participants will be organized in project teams consisting of 2 or more faculty co-supervisors from\ndifferent fields and institutions\, a graduate student or postdoc near-peer mentor\, and 1-2 junior trainee researchers\n(highschool\, undergraduate\, or postbac). Each team will participate in the training curriculum alongside the entire\nIMSI-Summer Institute cohort. In addition\, IMSI includes multiple workshops in inclusive mentoring and team-based\nscience approaches. Projects include evaluating movement\, modeling muscle\, mathematical descriptions of behavior\,
