Title: Neuromechanics of balance: Understanding muscles, proprioception, and neural control to inspire assistive robots

Speaker: Prof Lena Ting (Emory University & Georgia Tech)

Date: Fri, Oct 9, 2:15-3:30pm PT / 5:15-6:30pm ET

Abstract: How do our brain and bodies interact to create robust movement?  Neuromechanical interactions at multiple scales shape the way we move, particularly in gait and balance. I will discuss key neuromechanical principles and computational models of muscle properties, muscle spindle sensory signals, and hierarchical neural pathways from the spinal cord to the brain that enable the body to balance. Physiological and neural response to balance perturbations further reveal interactions between cognitive and motor processes in an individual-specific way. Understanding these neuromechanical interactions at multiple scales is key to understanding  movement across the continuum from motor impairment to motor skill, as well as to develop physiologically inspired assistive robots.
